Story of David Goliath free essay sample

The story of David and Goliath is one of the most interesting stories in the bible. Goliath was a huge man. He was a giant that stood about 9 feet tall. He cursed at the Israelites and threw bad insults towards their God. He was a Philistine and wanted to settle the battle in a one-on-one contest so that many soldiers did not have to die. He was asking for one man among the Israelites to come out to fight for them. Everyone was afraid because he was such a terrifying giant. David was just a small teenager. He was young, but he was brave. Although Goliath had a suit of armor, all David had was a slingshot and five smooth stones and his shepherd staff. King Saul tried to get David to wear armor to protect him, but it was too heavy and David had never tried to fight with it on before. When Goliath saw that the Israelites sent a boy to fight, he made fun of them some more. Then he told David he was going to rip him apart and feed him to the birds and beasts. David answered bravely and told him God would get the glory and that his armour and weapons will soon prove no match for him. David’s slingshot was a rope with a small pouch on the end and you would wave it around in a circle to get the speed you needed to release the stone. When Goliath came at David, he didnt get scared and run away. He went straight at Goliath. He took out a smooth stone from his shepherd’s bag and placed it in the sling. Then he slung it at the giant and hit him squarely in the forehead. It went into his skull and killed Goliath. Then David went and took Goliaths sword and cut off his head. That scared the Philistines so badly that they ran away in fear and were chased by the Israelites out of the land. That’s the story of David and Goliath.

Jazz dance free essay sample

The varieties of Jazz dance reflect the diversity of American culture. Jazz dance mirrors the social history of the American people, reflecting ethnic influences, historic events, and cultural changes. Jazz dance has been greatly Influenced by social dance and popular music. But, Like so much that Is from America, the history of Jazz dance begins somewhere else. The origins of Jazz music and dance are found In the rhythms and movements brought to America by African slaves. The style of African dance is earthy; low, knees bent, pulsating body movements emphasized by body isolations and hand-clapping. As slaves forced into America, starting during the 1 asss, Africans from many cultures were cut off from their families, languages and tribal traditions. The result was an intermingling of African cultures that created a new culture with both African and European elements. The Slave Act of 1740 prohibited slaves from playing African drums or performing African dances, but that did not suppress their desire to cling to those parts of their cultural identity. We will write a custom essay sample on Jazz dance or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The rhythms and movements of African dance: the foot stamping and tapping, hand- clapping and rhythmic vocal sounds were woven Into what we now call Jazz dance. In the 19th century, American whites decided that they enjoyed the music and dance the slaves had created. In minstrel shows, white entertainers parodied their conception of slave life and popularized the African style of dance and music. With white dancers as the star performers of the minstrel and vaudeville show, it was difficult for a black dancer to gain stature as part of a dance troupe.Because of this, many black performers migrated to Europe, where they introduced the newly emerging forms of Jazz music and Jazz dance. In Europe, these talented and innovative performers were more well-received than in America. The minstrel show evolved and was eventually absorbed into the 20th century musical comedy. Through the end of the sasss, Dixieland Jazz music, with its fast ragtime beat, spread from New Orleans to Chicago and New York. The growth of Jazz dance was directly influenced by this musical genre. In 1923, the Charleston was Introduced and Americans were quick to adopt it. In the Charleston, dancers used body Isolations for the first time In a social dance, and the hand-clapping and foot-stamping that It incorporated were a direct link to the dances African origin. This was also the era of Bill Bespangles Robinson, a black tap dancer who achieved world fame through the clean and clear percussive rhythms of his feet. The early forms of tap dance evolved from the Irish Gig, which incorporated limited upper body movements. As the movements of the tap dance became more flexible, the lightness of Robinsons style influenced the future of tap dance by changing the placement of the tap steps from the full foot to the ball of the foot. Bill Robinson was seen performing on Broadway, in Hollywood films, and in shows that toured the country. During the Depression of the asss, people escaped Into dance competitions In hopes of winning a cash prize. The sound of Jazz music started to change due to the symphonic Jazz of Paul Whitman. He brought full orchestration to his music and made syncopation a part of every song he played. (Syncopation places the accent or emphasis on normally unaccented beats of music. It adds to the surprise and spontaneity of jazz dance. ) The music of the music. The Swing Era also termed the Big Band Era, generated well-known dances such as the Lindy Hop and the Boogie Woozier. During the sasss, Fred Astaire had en a vital part of Broadway, but in 1933 when musicals found their fame in Hollywood, he became the leading man for movie musicals.Astaire created a unique dance style that brought elegance to the dancers image. He blended the flowing steps of ballet with the abruptness of Jazz movements and was the first dancer at that time to dance every musical note so that the rhythmic pattern of the music was mirrored in the dance steps. Just when social dancing was at its height, World War 2 put a stop to its popularity. Lack of attendance, plus the intricate rhythmic patterns of odder Jazz music, which were too complex for social dancing, led to the closing of dance halls and ballrooms. With the demise of social dance, the growth of Jazz dance as a professional dance form began. During the sasss, Jazz dance was influenced by ballet and modern dance. By blending the classical technique of ballet with the natural bodily expression of modern dance, Jazz developed a sophisticated artistic quality. Unlike early Jazz dance, which was performed by talented entertainers without formal training, modern Jazz dance was performed by professionals trained in ballet and modern dance. It was during this time that man who later came to be known as the Father of Theatrical Jazz Dance, Jack Cole, was busy developing his technique. Jack Cole had studied modern, ballet, and ethnic dance, had been a student at Danishes and had done choreographic work in the nightclub scene. In the sasss there was a serious demand for groups of trained dancers for film work and Jack Cole was the one who started developing these trained Jazz dancers for the Hollywood movie musicals. Also, during this time Gene Kelly, began making his mark as a dancer in Hollywood musicals. His impact on Jazz was his individual, energetic dance style that combined athletic, gymnastic qualities with Jazz and tap. During the sasss, Rock and Roll music, which had been played by black musicians for many years already at this point, became popular with teenage audiences and thus new kinds of social dances were created to go with this type of music. During this decade, the influence of Latin American music and da nce enriched Jazz dance as was seen in the landmark Broadway production of West Side Story, choreographed by Jerome Robbins . It was also during this time that Matt Amatol, who had been a dancer of the Jack Cole style in many Hollywood musicals, began to develop his own teaching and performing style. He was another dancer who had studied ballet, modern, and tap and then found his love of Jazz in his late ass. Matt Amatol went on to teach dance in New York for many years before moving to Europe in the sass and developing his school and style based on what he calls Freestyle although many people still label him as a Jazz dance teacher and choreographer. With the sasss came the twist, as easy to perform, overnight craze which brought adults back to the social dance floor. At this point, Mouton was the new hot musical craze. It came out of Detroit and the groups featured choreographed routines mostly done by Charles Coolly Atkins. This idea of the lead singer being spotlighted in front while the back up singers performed choreographed moves, was new and is credited to Mr. . Atkins, who was brought in to Mouton to work with these groups and give them a uniform look onstage. His work can be seen on Mouton groups such as The Supremes, Smoky just as we do today, people copied those dance steps they saw the singers doing, which in turn popularized that style of dance. It carried through the asss, asss, and asss in groups like En Vogue, The Jackson, The Backstreet Boys, Ann.s, and is still strong today in all the vocal stage choreography you see where a singer has backup dancers. During the sasss, two other names emerged among the ranks of professional Jazz dance greats: Lugging and Gus Giordano.Lugging developed his technique as a result of an auto accident that left him paralyzed on the right side. Doctors claimed he would never walk, let alone dance again, but he persisted through operations, physical therapy, and his own study of body development based n dance exercise, and eventually was able to not only walk again, but to dance and to teach. The technique he developed is influenced by ballet and is very lyrical. His technique requires that the body be exercised to its fullest to develop the strength necessary for muscle control, yet still look beautiful.Gus Giordano style is classical but greatly influenced by the natural and freer body movements of modern dance. His technique teaches isolation movements, emphasizing the head and torso and creating an uplifted look of elegance. Yoga is incorporated into Giordano technique as a means of relaxation. In the sass Bob Fosse became the outstanding name is jazz dance. He performed on Broadway and in films, but his true success was as a choreographer. His work includes the films All That Jazz and Sweet Charity, the Broadway hit Dancing, and the television special Liz With a Z, among many other famous works. He choreographed a reproduction of Chicago in 1975. Posses style was distinct; it was highly creative and often included bizarre movements; it was slick, erotic and intense. He was a one man Jazz phenomenon whose style continued to make its mark on the Broadway stage and in Hollywood throughout the sass. The sass also saw the huge impact of John Travel in Saturday Night Fever, which boosted the image of the male dancer; of Michael Bonnets production of A Chorus Line; and the notable Jazz production of Grease. But another major influence on Jazz dance came not from a person, but from an area. Out of the ghetto neighborhoods of New York City came the dance phenomenon called breathtaking. Breathtaking is an umbrella term for all forms of modern street dance: breaking (specific moves done on or close to the floor); freestyle (gymnastic moves and partner lifts); electric boogie flowing movements that enter one part of the body and exit another); popping (any staccato movement); Egyptian (an imitation of Egyptian style art); and floating (steps such as the moonwalk, in which the feet seem to float across the floor). These dance styles can be traced to the West African cultures of Mali, Gambia, and Senegal. In the late sass, many West African dancers came to America and settled in the South Bronx. Breathtaking emerged not as an entertainment form, but as a competition, as a means of attaining superiority in street corner fraternities; it was an alternative to gang warfare. In the sass, breathtaking exploded out of the ghettos and into mainstream American dance culture. In this s ame period of time, Jazz dance further expanded its horizons when it combined with physical fitness classes to make exercise more fun and sociable. The result was a new hybrid; aerobic dance classes. The most prominent name in the sass musical theatre was Andrew Lloyd Webber, who is acclaimed for shifting the focus of the Broadway musical from America to the Opera, and the hottest musical of the sass, Cats, with choreography by Gillian Lynn. Jazz dance in the sass received a tremendous boost from prominent movies f the decade: Fame, Flashcards, Footloose, Staying Alive, Breaking and Dirty Dancing. Attendance in Jazz dance classes skyrocketed with students eager to conquer this exciting dance form. American businesses noticed the large audience appeal of Jazz dance and moved in quickly to capitalize on the craze. As never before, jazz dance appeared in television commercials for Panasonic, Coca-Cola, and many fast food chains. The sass also saw the introduction of MET a new medium for dance and professional dancers. When MET began broadcasting in 1981, music videos combined high-energy Jazz, ballet, street dance and social dance in striking ND innovative ways. Some major choreographers of the period were Michael Peters, Jeffrey Workaday, Lester Wilson, Toni Basil, Paula Abdul, Madonna, and Janet Jackson. The supreme video star of the sass was of course, Michael Jackson.Michael Jackson made a major impact on the direction of Jazz dance with his creative dance steps, his videos, his presentation and his choreography, most of which was done by Michael Peters, or by Jackson and Peters as a team. Two other names to add to the list of professional instructors who have influenced the development of Jazz dance are Frank Hatchet and Joe Trainee. Entertainers, students, and dance teachers from all over the world come to study with Frank Hatchet. Frank continuously tours the country giving master classes, and making special guest appearances. In addition, Frank is one of the featured master teachers for the annual Jazz Dance World Congress. The Frank Hatchet style is a blend of strength, funk, and individual interpretation, with an emphasis on selling your performance. Associated exclusively to Frank Hatchet, his unique energy and spirit have come to be called POP. Joe Trainee started studying in New York in the sass and later appeared in many elevation specials and variety shows. His teaching style is comparable to his style on the dance floor; up to the minute, fast, flashy, and funky. The variety of techniques he brought from New York are also a part of his unique style which many refer to as West Coast Jazz or L. A. Jazz. This style is driven by current musical trends, is rhythmic and Jazzy. He has channeled his enthusiasm for dance in another direction as well; his own dance conventions and competitions. In the sass Jazz dance world, the buzz words in training centers were street dancing, street funk, and hip hop. Street dance is inner city dance taken directly from the street corners with performers using boom boxes as their accompaniment. The Fly Girls dancers featured on the early sass hit show In Living Color, gave many primetimes viewers their first look at street dance. Choreographer Rosier Perez is credited with developing this style of Jazz which mixed street moves with technical ballet and Jazz moves. Street dancing may be considered an umbrella dance term that encompasses funk, popping, breathtaking, and hip hop. Hip hop dance is done to hip hop music. The dance style uses the whole body including complex footwork, body isolations, reawakening and gymnastic moves. Hip hop is a style of clothing, attitude, dance and music.Jazz dance in the new century continues to both look back to the classics for inspiration and move forward to create new dance performances. In film, Jazz dance, hip hop and ballet fused in the box office success Center Stage. In some ways, given a tremendous boost and dancers yet again realized the importance of training in wide varieties of dance styles. The current Jazz dance performance world has sought a wider variety of performance platforms, including cabaret and lounge wows, cruise ship entertainment, and touring dance companies. Concert shows with musical superstars feature dancers as an integral part of their concert entertainment.Jazz dance, and in particular musical comedy, has become a primary theme park entertainment. Music videos, major television productions, such as award presentation galas, and industrials (promotional business shows) still prominently use Jazz dance. The history of Jazz dance has evolved in pace with the music and moods of each decade. African American culture has been a huge influence on the development of Jazz dance. For example, the Charleston, Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, Swim, Waits, Breathtaking, and Hip Hop all grew out of the full-bodied, free- spirited music and dance heritage of African American culture. Today Jazz dance is recognized as a uniquely American contribution to dance art. Afterthought.. There is a contradiction today between the high level of technical training received in class and the apparent abandonment of technique in some current choreography. For example, hip hop is a popular style of dancing in music videos. It is very aerobic, but not technical in the historical dance sense. Consequently, the rigorous and peccadillo training of the traditional Jazz dance class may seem unnecessary and irrelevant to the young dancer is used to seeing street dancing in so many music videos.

World religion an Example by

World religion There is an engaging in a lively and stimulating debate regarding the escalating interest in spirituality and its effect upon human civilization down the history. In fact it could be ascertained that the re-enchantment of the popular culture with alternative spiritualities and, interestingly, argues that this is spawned by an occluded spirituality within the culture itself, despite its secular nature. This rising spirituality, which could be termed as occulture, is informed by a wide range of ideas, practices and methodologies that traditionally have not resided within mainstream religions. (King, 2006) Need essay sample on "World religion" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed Being territorial and maintaining privacy are other aspects of a man that proves his incompetence and as he knows this open secret quite well enough he tries to acquire as much as room possible for himself. This sense of territory makes him go to the extent to make an identity as a distinctive commune that is specifically different from others. This is almost a case of identity crisis for human. Thus to protect this identity he creates authority, morality, religion, philosophy and other conceptual prejudices. Right from the era of Neanderthal religion and Cro-Magnon religion to the course of Neolithic religion this trend is quite evident. However, to develop this sense of commune the human race developed different specific rites, created specific myths and manifested totems and taboos that is signifies the identity of the clan. This also manifested power for the powerful and it reflected in the acts of sacrifice like the early pagans and later Aztecs and Mayas. Sacrifice is one element that appears to be the common factor among early religions and it is directly related to the survival of the clan along with creating a sense of superiority over the other clans. Nevertheless, the projection of sacrifice was devoted to a spiritual being in order to please that being but the ultimate idea was to prove that a specific clan or commune was better and more powerful than the other was and the territorial dominance is sustained. (Kar, 2001) However, during the development of the later religions like Buddhism (fifth century BC) and Christianity (first century AD) spirituality took over as the prime force of religious practices and the face of religions, as we know it, took shape. It should be remembered that during this time of development the regional territorial supremacy was escalated to the height of empire like that of Roman, in case of Christianity, and Magadhan, in case of Buddhism, and thus the territorial nature of religion was not needed as it had already passed to Kings and military generals. (Lamb, 2004) The experiences of the late twentieth century and early twenty first century have administered cruel shocks to that modernist prejudice. Some say that it is only through suffering that we learn the importance of critical evaluation; yet change is a certain thing. If one is to believe in a good creator, it is necessary to understand what kind of behavior leads to human fulfillment and happiness. There are those who believe that one way to do this is to treat others, as you would like to be treated yourself. The modern way of religion is based on religion spirituality but the concept of religion started with territorial identity and supremacy. A Glimpse at the mighty structures of the past

A Glimpse at the mighty structures of the past A Glimpse at the mighty structures of the pastIn the past a cultures buildings and Architecture served as a sign of power wealth and prestige. The Aztecs were able to construct marvelous buildings and temples, which still stand to this day. In a sense the Aztec can be compared to Ancient Rome at its time of greatness, The Aztec Empire ruled as a powerful influence over surrounding areas. Its architecture serves as a demonstration of the Aztec might and power, much like we would brag about our most prestigious cities here in America. The Aztecs were an American Indian people that had a great civilization in Mexico. They thrived in Tenochtitlan, current day Mexico City, during the 1400's and early 1500's (geocities.com). Their architecture reflects an image of the people who developed it. They had been building structures for hundreds of years. This experience and knowledge made their architecture some of the most advanced and elaborate of their time.English: Model depicting the first l ake battle bet...Their greatest examples of architecture include the Sacrificial Temple, the Shrines of the gods, the Emperor's Palace and their everyday homes. The Sacrificial Temple was a very important structure to the Aztecs. They were extremely religious people and believed in sacrifices to please the gods. They were not monotheistic but polytheistic (believing in many gods). The purpose for building a Sacrificial Temple was to sacrifice people as an offering to the gods. The Aztecs believed so strongly in pleasing the gods they worshiped, over 20,000 people were sacrificed a year (www.courses.psu.edu). The construction of a temple wasn't done in a traditional manner; buildings were not built on an empty spot. If a new temple was constructed in the place of an older temple, the older temple was not destroyed; rather, the new temple was built over the older one.

Chaos Complexity and Complex Adaptive Systems Essay

Chaos Complexity and Complex Adaptive Systems - Essay Example It was founded by I Ansoff, Their discipline had some links to urban planning, system theory & cybernetics. This school was administered and spread by professional managers, people with MBA's staff experts (especially in finance and management) consultants & government controllers. Their intended message was to formalize. The message received by their intended listeners was to make a program and administer one. They belonged to the Prescriptive school category. Their theory states that a stitch in time saves time. Their failure was caused by their not supporting real-time strategy making nor encourages creative accidents. c) Positioning school - This was founded by Sun Tzu in his literary work The Art of War. This school concentrated on economics or the industrial organization and the military history. This school was championed by consulting boutiques type of business and United States writers. They espouse the theory of analyzing things. The message that was received by their liste ners was that they should calculate their every move and not concentrate on creating or committing. This theory belonged also to the Prescriptive management school of thought. Their theory was to consider only the facts of in management decision making. Their shortfall was due to their strategy being reduced to generic positions that were selected thru formalized analysis of industry. d) The Entrepreneurial school was established by J A Schump and A H Cole with collaboration from other economics faculty. Their writings were based on economics. Their intended message was to envision the future but the listeners interpreted their teachings as to centralize and hope for the best. They belonged to the second type of school called the descriptive. Their theory was to take themselves to the leader. Their failure was due to the unclear vision and they depended too much on the leader to for decision making purpose. e) The Cognitive school was established by H A Simon and J March. Their base discipline was Psychology (cognitive). This school was preached by pessimists who are psychologically bent. Their intended message was to cope with any situation or create a solution. The message that got thru to the listeners was that worry was evident in all their actions. This school was described as Descriptive. Its saying goes I will see if when I believe it. Their failure was due to the too subjective approach to strategy formulation. f) The learning school was established by LIndbio, Cyert, March, Weick, Quinn, Prahlad & Hamel. There seems to be no base discipline in this school. Chaos theory in mathematics had started here. The movers of this school were people who loved to experiment, ambiguous and adaptable to many situations like in Japan and Scandinavia They are espousing that the prefer learning but the message that reaches the listeners seems to be the movers just want a play atmosphere to abound. Their school falls under Descriptive type. Their very famous line goes if at first you don't succeed, try and try again. Their failure seems to be that their strategic management process seems to be chaotic or in trouble. Their teachings seem chaotic.g) The power school was established by Alison, Pfeffer, Salancik & Astley.

Tenn-Tech Plc Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Tenn-Tech Plc - Case Study Example The situation demands a prompt and a proactive action from the top management. Hence it is vital to bring in a new management accounting approach that is more in consonance with the prevalent developments and circumstances. Resorting to throughput accounting seems to be just the right approach for Tenn-Tech Plc in the existing scenario. However, this is easier said then done. This calls for a total paradigm shift on the part of the key players and the stakeholders at Tenn-Tech Plc. It is imperative for the top echelons of power at Tenn-Tech Plc to be cognizant of the marked shift in their perception that an adherence to a new management accounting system will call for. Throughput accounting will not be merely an another management accounting system, but will be in fact an entire new way in which the organization under consideration will be required to perceive itself and its role in the global market scenario ("Throughput Accounting" 67). The basic fault with the activity-based costing system that till now was being resorted to by Tenn-Tech Plc is that it believes that the efficiencies yielded by the changes wrought in the localized factors within the company, be it the marketing department, manufacturing or any other section, will automatically lead to enhanced over all efficiencies (Corbett 38). That is why the directors and the top management are wasting their strength, time and efforts in criticizing and finding faults with the individual local sections wi thin the company. While the Financial Director seems to be at loggerheads with the Marketing Director, the Chief Executive Boris Barker has already given way to a serious labour problem with the aid of the Management Accountant Huggenkis, both of them being guided by their obsession for covering the unreasonable overheads. No doubt such moves appear to be narrowly reactionary in their approach, rather then being all inclusive and visionary. The basic fault with the management accounting system at Tenn-Tech Plc is that it is based on the fundamental premise that for an organizational chain to be really strong, it is a must that all the links in it be really sturdy and tough (Corbett 41). This definitely sounds good, but is surely not true in a real life scenario.Throughput accounting is an alternative approach to management accounting that holds that the eventual strength of an organizational chain is determined by the strength of the weakest link in that chain (Corbett 41). This app roach towards management accounting is based on the theory of constraints proposed by E.M. Goldratt in his novel The Goal. This approach will conclusively address the dilemma being faced by Tenn-Tech Plc, which is how to design a more efficient management accounting system. According to throughput accounting, the notion of allocating costs to products, which was till now being adhered to by Tenn-Tech Plc is inherently faulty and invariably leads to wrong decisions. As interpreted and suggested by the theory of constraints, Tenn-Tech needs to be viewed as a system that consists of several individual and interdependent elements. Thus the primary task before Tenn-Tech is to be conversant with the constraints existing within this system. According
